Established in the mid-19th century, Buffalo Trace holds the distinction of being the oldest still-operating distillery in the United States. Named after the Great Buffalo Trace, the distillery was originally known as the George T. Stagg Distillery and produced whiskey released under the same name. Following its acquisition in 1999 by the Sazerac Company, the distillery was re-christened, and along came a new line of eponymous whiskeys. Master distiller emeritus Elmer T. Lee came out of retirement to develop these whiskeys.
Serving as the flagship of this new range is the Buffalo Trace Straight Bourbon Whiskey. From a proprietary low rye mash bill, the bourbon maturates in new, charred American oak barrels slowly developing its flavor profile for 8-10 years. After this, it is tapped, cut with pure water, bottled, and labeled ready to be enjoyed by bourbon lovers the world over.
This deep caramel-colored bourbon has an inviting whiff of honey, caramel, marzipan, corn, brown sugar, citrus peels, cinnamon, and oak, resulting in a toasty palate of corn and rye notes. There are also hints of dark fruits, honey, vanilla, toffee, Brulee sugar, cinnamon, pepper, and more oak culminating in a long-lasting finish of ripe citrus, caramel, vanilla, toffee, and wood.
