What do you give to a whiskey lover who claims to have tasted it all? Try the Angel’s Envy Rye Whiskey Limited, a rye whiskey with the goodness of rum.
Taking inspiration from their port-finished bourbon, Angel Envy looked to innovate on good old rye whiskey. Under the supervision of Master Distiller Lincoln Henderson, they took their six-year-old whiskey and finished them in select Caribbean rum casks.
The result is Angel’s Envy Rye, a spirit with raw that blends the intense flavors of rye with the mellow sweetness of rum. A unique combination worthy of being rated as one of the Top 10 Whiskies in the Summer 2013 issue of Whisky Advocate as well as being named the “Editor’s Pick” by John Hansell himself.
Taking a somewhat traditional mash of 95% rye and 5% malted barley, Henderson and company fermented the grains with their proprietary strain of yeast. After distillation, the whiskey is aged for six years in medium-char American oak barrels before being finished for 18 months in rum casks from none other than Plantation Rum.
This imparts the whiskey with a scrumptious nose of toasted banana bread with notes of citrus, maple, spice, brown sugar, and caramel. The taste is slightly more usual with a palate of toasted grain, caramel, mint, honey, and maple, with notes of more brown sugar, maple, and banana. Its finish is somewhat sweet and simple, creating very smooth and drinkable rye despite being bottled at 100 proof.
